Senegal prepare for friendly test against the United States

Senegal will head into Tuesday’s friendly against the United States carrying confidence and continuity, while their hosts continue to search for answers after a difficult run of results.

The Lions of Teranga face the Americans in a preparation match designed to help both teams fine-tune their plans for upcoming international commitments. However, the two sides arrive in contrasting circumstances.

The United States have endured a challenging spell in recent weeks, suffering three consecutive defeats. Their most recent outing, a heavy 4-0 loss to Switzerland, intensified concerns surrounding the team’s defensive organisation and overall consistency.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino is still working to shape his squad and establish a clear identity, with the American side continuing to seek the right balance ahead of future competitions.

Senegal, meanwhile, arrive with a greater sense of stability. Since the appointment of Pape Thiaw, the team has developed a defined approach built on defensive discipline and effective transitions between defence and attack.

The West Africans have also benefited from continuity within the squad, combining experienced internationals with emerging talents.

That blend has helped maintain positive momentum and has strengthened confidence within the group ahead of the encounter.

The match is expected to provide an important test for Senegal against a style of football different from what they frequently encounter on the African continent.

The United States are known for their intensity, physical approach and willingness to attack through wide areas.

As a result, controlling possession and dominating the midfield battle could be crucial if Senegal are to take advantage of the spaces that may emerge in an American defence that has come under scrutiny in recent months.

Much of Senegal’s attention will focus on several of its established stars. The squad is expected to feature captain Kalidou Koulibaly, Everton midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye, Pape Matar Sarr, Ismaïla Sarr, Lamine Camara and captain Sadio Mané.

There is also interest surrounding the fitness of Nicolas Jackson, whose situation continues to be assessed following a demanding club season.

The projected starting line-up includes Édouard Mendy in goal, supported by a defence featuring Youssouf Sabaly, Koulibaly, Moussa Niakhaté and Ismail Jakobs.

In midfield, Gueye, Camara and Sarr are expected to provide control and creativity, while Ismaïla Sarr, Jackson and Mané could lead the attack.

For Senegal, the fixture represents another opportunity to measure progress under Thiaw. For the United States, it is a chance to halt a disappointing run and restore confidence before more significant challenges lie ahead.
