Moussa Niakhate has been released from Senegal’s training camp in Marseille after an injury ruled him out of Sunday’s friendly against Comoros at the Stade Velodrome.
The Olympique Lyonnais defender underwent an MRI scan on Thursday morning, after which Senegal manager Patrick Vieira decided he should leave the squad and return to his club for further medical treatment.
The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) confirmed the 30-year-old’s withdrawal ahead of the match, which is scheduled for 4 October.
“Our player Moussa Niakhate, who is injured, underwent an MRI this morning in Marseille. After the examinations, Patrick Vieira decided to release him,” the FSF said.
“The defender is therefore unavailable for Senegal–Comoros, scheduled for 4 October at the Velodrome, and will return to his club to continue his medical care. The FSF wishes him a speedy recovery.”
The federation has not disclosed the precise nature of Niakhate’s injury or indicated how long he is expected to be unavailable. He will now return to Lyon, where his treatment will continue.
His absence is a significant setback for Vieira, who has given Niakhate a prominent role since taking charge of Senegal. The defender captained the Lions in their matches against Mozambique and Ethiopia, the first two games of Vieira’s tenure.
It remains to be seen whether Niakhate was being considered as an alternative to the absent Sadio Mane or as Vieira’s first-choice captain on the pitch. His appointment nevertheless underlined the manager’s confidence in him.
The former Nottingham Forest player regularly wears the captain’s armband at club level and has done so since he was 20. Vieira appears to view him as an experienced figure capable of helping guide Senegal’s next generation.
His withdrawal therefore leaves Senegal without both an important member of their defence and one of the new leaders Vieira has identified within the squad.
The Lions will have to adjust their plans before facing Comoros on Sunday afternoon in Marseille. The friendly is intended to help Vieira continue shaping his team following his opening matches as Senegal manager.
Niakhate’s absence could give another defender the chance to establish himself within the new order. For the captain, the immediate priority is to recover as quickly as possible before returning to Olympique Lyonnais and, at a future international camp, to a Senegal side in which Vieira has already entrusted him with major responsibilities.
