Sbangani Zulu earns Orlando Pirates praise after dramatic start

Orlando Pirates defender Sbangani Zulu says the support from the club’s fans has given him the confidence to play without fear after making an immediate impression in his first appearances for the club.

The left centre-back joined Pirates from Richards Bay FC during the off-season in a relatively low-profile move. His arrival was overshadowed by the recruitment of more prominent names, including Ghampani Lungu, Mthetheleli Mthiyane and Bohale Ngwato.

Contract details were not disclosed, but Zulu quickly made his presence felt. He made his official debut in the MTN8 quarter-final against Durban City FC at home on 8 August, and has since emerged as a reliable option in the centre of defence.

His performances have also made him popular with the Ghost supporters. Fans have regularly chanted his name whenever he receives the ball, with the noise around the young defender growing after Pirates’ 4-0 league victory over Kruger United at Mbombela Stadium.

That match produced the defining moment of Zulu’s early spell at the club.

With goalkeeper Sipho Chaine beaten, Zulu appeared in the right place to clear a goal-bound effort from the line. The intervention preserved Pirates’ clean sheet and helped him claim the Man of the Match award, the first such honour of his career.

“I’m very happy to be the Man of the Match because it’s the first time I’ve received a Man of the Match award,” Zulu told the club’s media.

He explained that his decision to move across the goal came after recognising that Chaine had already protected one side of the net.

“In that situation, they were angling for a cross. I saw that Sipho had the first post covered, so I decided to go cover the far post, which was open.

“It happened that they headed the ball towards the far post, and fortunately I was already there.

“I have to say a big thank you to the supporters. Since I have been in the team, they have shown me more support than I have ever received.

“Even when I play, you can hear them chanting, ‘Zuuuuulu’. So, the way they support me encourages me and makes me fearless,” he added.

Although his start has been encouraging, Zulu knows he has not yet secured a permanent place in the Pirates starting line-up.

He remains involved in a competitive battle for selection, with Nkosinathi Sibisi and Mpho Chabatsane among the defenders also competing for opportunities.

For now, however, Zulu’s debut campaign has delivered a strong early statement. His composed clearance against Kruger United, combined with the backing he has received from the stands, has established him as a valued defensive option at Orlando Pirates.
