Saudi Arabia targets late-2026 opening for new 47,000-seat Aramco Stadium ahead of 2027 Asian Cup

Saudi Arabia plans to open the new Aramco Stadium in Al Khobar before the end of this year, with the venue earmarked to host matches at the AFC Asian Cup 2027, according to Saudi newspaper Arriyadiyah.

The stadium’s management is working towards a late-2026 inauguration, but the exact date will depend on the completion of both construction and operational readiness. The report states that comprehensive testing of all stadium systems is scheduled for September, and the venue will only be officially opened once those trials have been successfully concluded.

Aramco Stadium is being positioned as the main home ground for Al Qadsiah in Al Khobar and is regarded as one of Saudi Arabia’s flagship new sports projects. The development underlines the country’s efforts to upgrade its football infrastructure ahead of hosting major international tournaments.

Key venue for Asian Cup 2027 and World Cup 2034 plans

Built on a site of around 800,000 square metres, Aramco Stadium will have a capacity of 47,000 spectators. It has been designated as one of the facilities prepared to stage matches at the AFC Asian Cup 2027, which Saudi Arabia is set to host for the first time.

The ground is also listed among the venues planned for use during the FIFA World Cup 2034, for which Saudi Arabia is the confirmed host. As such, the stadium is being constructed to meet the requirements for major continental and global competitions, with a particular focus on modern infrastructure and fan experience.

Distinctive design and sustainability credentials

The architectural concept of Aramco Stadium is inspired by the flowing motion of a water vortex, with sweeping external curves intended to create a striking visual presence from every angle. This design has already received formal recognition, earning the “Mostadam” diamond certificate – the highest rating in Saudi Arabia’s sustainable building programme.

This certification reflects the project’s emphasis on environmentally conscious construction and operation, including energy efficiency and sustainable materials. The stadium is part of a wider national push to align sports infrastructure with long-term development and sustainability goals.

Advanced pitch and irrigation technology

The project incorporates advanced systems to protect and maintain the playing surface. These include technology to control moisture levels and ventilate the layers of turf, helping to safeguard pitch quality in the country’s demanding climate.

An intelligent irrigation management system will adjust water usage based on weather conditions and the state of the playing surface. The pitch itself will be composed of 95% natural grass and 5% hybrid turf, combining traditional turf with reinforced elements to improve durability.

In addition, specialised lighting rigs will be used to support grass growth in shaded areas of the pitch, ensuring a consistent surface across the entire field. This technology is designed to keep the grass in optimum condition throughout the season and during congested tournament schedules.

With testing due in September and an opening pencilled in before the end of the year, Aramco Stadium is set to play a central role in Saudi Arabia’s preparations for staging both the AFC Asian Cup 2027 and the FIFA World Cup 2034.
