Jorthy Mokio scored twice as Ajax Amsterdam secured a convincing 5-2 victory away to Groningen on Sunday in the ninth round of the Dutch league.
The 18-year-old defensive midfielder, who is of Congolese origin, made a decisive contribution in a match largely controlled by the Amsterdam club. His two goals came during an impressive second-half spell and helped Ajax complete a comfortable away win.
Mokio opened his account in the 69th minute, finding the net for the first time in the match. He struck again six minutes later, doubling Ajax’s advantage with his second goal in quick succession.
The pair of finishes represented a notable attacking contribution from a player whose usual role is to protect the midfield and provide defensive balance. Against Groningen, however, Mokio showed that he can also make an impact in the final third.
He remained on the pitch for the full match, underlining the trust placed in him by his manager. His performance combined the responsibilities expected of a defensive midfielder with an unexpectedly influential presence in front of goal.
The display marks another significant step in Mokio’s development at the highest level. Still only 18, he is continuing to gain experience with Ajax and has demonstrated that he can offer the club qualities in more than one area of the pitch.
Scoring twice in the same match also gives Mokio an important opportunity to increase his visibility during the season. His contribution was central to Ajax’s success at Groningen and provided a memorable individual highlight in the club’s ninth league fixture.
Ajax will soon turn their attention to the second matchday of the UEFA Conference League league phase, when they face Atalanta.
