Sadio Mane’s continued Senegal absence raises international retirement questions

Sadio Mane has been left out of Senegal’s squad for a second successive international break, prompting questions over whether the Al-Nassr forward could be considering retirement from international football.

The 33-year-old will miss Senegal’s double-header against Sudan on 12 and 16 November. His latest absence has been attributed to family reasons, following the physical problems that ruled him out of Patrick Vieira’s first squad since becoming head coach.

Mane’s omission comes at a time when Senegal have already seen several established internationals end their careers with the national team since the disappointing 2026 World Cup.

Cherif Ndiaye announced his retirement in late August, Edouard Mendy followed in September and Ismail Jakobs ended his international career at the end of October.

That sequence of departures, combined with Mane’s prolonged absence, has raised concern over the future of one of Senegal’s most important players and a figure closely associated with the national side.

However, Vieira rejected the suggestion that Mane is disengaging from the Lions of Teranga.

“No, no, no. Sadio is someone who still feels he has a lot to offer the national team, and I share that view too,” the Senegal head coach said at a news conference on Thursday.

Vieira also explained why Mane would not join up with the squad for the matches against Sudan.

“There is going to be an event during this camp. He wants to be close to his family and that is something I understand,” he said.

“We agreed together that he could stay close to his family because that was what he wanted to do,” Vieira added.

The comments provide reassurance over Mane’s immediate international future, although Vieira had also sounded optimistic about Jakobs before the defender subsequently announced his retirement.

There are nonetheless important differences between the two situations. Nothing currently indicates that Mane is preparing to step away from Senegal, while a player of his standing would be expected to announce such a significant decision personally.

For now, Senegal can therefore remain confident that Mane has not ended his international career. His absence from two consecutive gatherings, however, means his return will be keenly anticipated.

Mane’s next involvement with Senegal remains uncertain, but Vieira’s explanation suggests that the current situation is linked to family commitments rather than a decision to stop representing his country.
