Rulani Mokwena promises to build on Pyramids success after unveiling

Rulani Mokwena says he is excited by the opportunity to lead Pyramids FC and has pledged to build on the Egyptian club’s recent success rather than make sweeping changes to the team.

The South African was officially unveiled as Pyramids’ new head coach on Tuesday, taking charge of a club he described as “incredible” as he begins a new chapter in his coaching career.

Mokwena spoke highly of the work carried out by his predecessor and the existing squad, stressing that his arrival would not mean a complete overhaul of the team’s mentality.

“I think Pyramids is an incredible football club and I am very excited about this challenge,” Mokwena said at his unveiling.

The 39-year-old acknowledged the foundations already in place at the club and praised the previous coaching staff for their contribution to Pyramids’ progress.

Rather than immediately imposing a radically different philosophy, Mokwena said his intention is to preserve the positive mentality that has helped the club establish itself among Egypt’s leading sides.

He believes continuity will be important as he seeks to introduce his ideas while maintaining the strengths that have contributed to Pyramids’ recent achievements.

Mokwena’s appointment represents another major step in a coaching career that has seen him rise rapidly through the South African football system.

He previously enjoyed a successful spell at Mamelodi Sundowns, where he was part of a coaching setup that delivered domestic and continental success. His departure from the club, however, brought an end to a period in which he had established himself as one of the prominent young coaches in African football.

Now in Egypt, Mokwena faces the challenge of maintaining Pyramids’ upward trajectory while competing for major domestic and continental honours.

The new coach insisted that his priority is not simply to arrive with his own ideas, but to understand the club, respect the work already completed and then find ways to improve the team.

He also made clear that the scale of the challenge does not intimidate him.

Mokwena said he and his coaching staff will “fight hard” to continue Pyramids’ success story and take the club to an even higher level.

His comments are likely to reassure supporters who will expect the new coach to build on the progress made under the previous regime while also delivering further silverware.

For Mokwena, the immediate task will be to translate his ambitious words into results as he begins preparations for the new campaign.

With Pyramids having established themselves as a major force in Egyptian football, the South African knows expectations will be high.

But rather than viewing the pressure as a burden, Mokwena appears determined to embrace the responsibility and help the club reach another level.

His message at the unveiling was clear: respect what has already been achieved, protect the mentality that made that success possible and work relentlessly to create an even stronger Pyramids side.
