Ruben Amorim targets rare Milan record in Juventus clash

Ruben Amorim can become the first Milan manager in 68 years to win his opening three Serie A matches if his side beat Juventus on Sunday.

Milan travel to face Juventus in one of the standout fixtures of the third round of the Italian top flight, with Amorim aiming to match a record that has stood since 1958.

According to Football Italia, victory at Juventus would make Amorim the first Milan manager since that year to begin his Serie A career with three consecutive wins.

The Portuguese coach has made a perfect start to his time in charge. Milan opened their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Torino before following it with a 2-0 win against Venezia.

A third successive league victory would place Amorim alongside three previous Milan managers who achieved the feat: Mario Sperone in 1952, Gipo Viani in 1956 and Luigi Bonizzoni in 1958.

Although several highly regarded coaches have led Milan since then, none has managed to reproduce that opening sequence of results.

Arrigo Sacchi, one of the most influential managers in the club’s history, lost his second match in charge against Fiorentina, with Milan beaten 2-0.

Fabio Capello also came close to completing the run. After winning his first two league matches as Milan manager, he drew 1-1 with Juventus in his third game in 1991.

Carlo Ancelotti, another former Milan manager to enjoy major success with the club, began his tenure with a draw against Piacenza in 2001.

Amorim would therefore become only the fourth manager to win his first three Serie A games with Milan, and the first to do so since Bonizzoni 68 years ago.

The match at Juventus will provide an early test of Milan’s progress under Amorim, while also offering the coach an opportunity to establish himself in the club’s record books.

Milan will be the visitors when the two sides meet on Sunday at 9:45pm.
