Milan manager Ruben Amorim says his side can develop into a “very good” team, but admitted fatigue contributed to their 4-2 home defeat by Bologna in Serie A.
The result was Milan’s first league defeat of the season and left them fifth in the table with 18 points from nine matches. They have won five games, drawn three and lost one.
Speaking to DAZN, Amorim said Milan would be better equipped to compete once their squad was fully available.
“We will become a very good team, and I believe we will be strong in the future,” he said. “When our squad is complete, we will be ready to compete in every match.
“I do not want to defend myself. Every time we get a bad result, it seems I have to come here and explain what happened. You can say whatever you want, but the truth is that we lost 4-2 at home, and a club the size of Milan cannot allow that to happen again. We have to try to win the next match.”
Amorim said he had noticed signs of tiredness from the opening stages against Bologna, who scored twice early in the game.
“From the first minute, I felt that the team was struggling with some fatigue and lacked energy,” he said. “We conceded two quick goals and tried to come back. We had a great chance through Camarda, but playing this number of matches was difficult for us.”
The Portuguese coach also explained that injuries had restricted his ability to make significant changes to his starting line-up. However, he rejected the idea that the absences alone were responsible for the defeat.
“We have many matches and players who are unavailable, but I did not say we lost because of the injuries,” Amorim said. “We lost because of a lack of energy, because we cannot rotate the players in the same way.”
He added that Milan’s performance suffered when they were unable to maintain their preferred approach.
“It is difficult to press all the time, and when we stop playing in our way, we struggle,” said Amorim. “A new coach cannot make a team play completely different football within a few months, and I think you understand that.”
Amorim accepted that fatigue did not excuse the mistakes made during the match.
“When you talk about the mistakes, it is not only about tactical aspects,” he said. “Sometimes we feel extremely tired, but that is not an excuse. We have to be ready.”
