Rodri transfer interest adds to Manchester City’s rebuilding challenge

Manchester City’s transition into a new era could become significantly more difficult if Rodri completes a move to Real Madrid, with the Spanish club reportedly confident it can sign the Spain captain before the summer transfer window closes.

The potential departure would deprive Enzo Maresca of one of the most important pieces of his new Manchester City project and leave the club facing a more complicated rebuilding process than initially expected.

City have already entered one of the most testing periods in their recent history following the end of Pep Guardiola’s reign. The possibility of losing Rodri would represent another major setback as the club attempts to reshape its squad.

Real Madrid have revived their long-standing interest in the midfielder after being impressed by the consistently high level of performances he has produced in recent seasons. The Spanish club are understood to believe the deal can be completed before the transfer window shuts on 1 September.

A key factor in Real Madrid’s pursuit is that Rodri has only one year remaining on his Manchester City contract. That situation could provide the Spanish club with an opportunity to secure the player either this summer or next, while Rodri’s previous desire to return to Spain may also strengthen Madrid’s position in negotiations.

During the March international break, Rodri was asked by reporters whether he would like to play in Spain again.

“Would I like to play in Spain again? Yes, of course I would like to return,” he said.

When questioned specifically about the possibility of joining Real Madrid, he added: “You cannot reject an offer from one of the best clubs in the world.”

Those comments have added to speculation that the 29-year-old could eventually return to his home country. Although they do not confirm that a transfer is imminent, they are likely to encourage Real Madrid as the club assesses whether an agreement can be reached before the end of the window.

Another key departure for City

There is a growing feeling within Manchester City that the conclusion of Guardiola’s time in charge could lead to several of the club’s leading players leaving as well. Rodri is considered to be at the front of that group.

His importance to City means that any transfer would be viewed as more than the loss of another established first-team player. It would remove one of the central figures around whom the team has been built and increase the scale of the changes required under Maresca.

Rodri’s preference for a return to Spain, combined with the length of his remaining contract, means the current summer and the following one could both represent favourable opportunities for Real Madrid to complete the move.

Manchester City have already lost several of the main pillars of their squad as the Guardiola era came to an end, according to Goal. Rodri’s exit would therefore be another significant blow and could open the door to a period of uncertainty and wider restructuring at the club.
