Riyad Mahrez’s game time under spotlight ahead of Al Ahli clash
Algerian international Riyad Mahrez is expected to be closely monitored in Al Ahli’s clash with Al Fayha FC as questions grow over how his playing time is being managed.
The 35-year-old winger, a key figure for Al Ahli Saudi FC since his arrival in 2023, has not completed a full 90 minutes in his last four Saudi Pro League appearances.
His last full match dates back to 19 February, highlighting a noticeable shift in how head coach Matthias Jaissle is using the experienced playmaker.
Mahrez, who has contributed 36 goals and 45 assists in 113 matches for the Jeddah-based side, remains central to the team’s attacking identity.
However, recent substitutions suggest a deliberate approach to managing his physical condition as the season intensifies.
That strategy was evident in the recent win over Damac FC, where Mahrez was substituted in the 71st minute despite his team leading 3-0.
The Algerian appeared frustrated at being withdrawn, keen to remain on the pitch, but Jaissle opted to preserve his star player.
The decision comes amid a demanding schedule for Al Ahli, who are competing on multiple fronts.
The club is preparing for a crucial AFC Champions League round of 16 encounter against Al Duhail SC on 13 April, a tie that could define their continental ambitions.
Domestically, the title race in the Saudi Pro League remains intense. Al Ahli are chasing leaders Al Nassr FC, who currently hold a five-point advantage. Maintaining squad fitness is therefore seen as essential as the season approaches its decisive phase.
There is also a broader perspective to consider. Mahrez is expected to play a significant role for Algeria at the 2026 World Cup, with national team coach Vladimir Petković relying on his experience and creativity.
Managing his workload at club level could help ensure he remains in peak condition for the international stage.
While some may interpret his reduced minutes as a sign of decline, the approach may instead reflect a long-term plan.
For now, attention will turn to Al Ahli’s upcoming match, where Mahrez’s role — whether as a starter or a managed presence — will once again be under scrutiny.
