Abdulhalim Okunola completes Boro U21 move from Southampton

England-Nigeria centre-back Abdulhalim Okunola has joined Boro U21 from Southampton U21, completing a move to Middlesbrough’s development side on 1 September 2026.

The 19-year-old defender switches clubs within Premier League 2 after spending the previous season with Southampton U21. He had moved into Southampton’s under-21 group in July 2025, following an earlier spell with the club’s under-18s.

Okunola began his development at Chelsea Youth before joining Southampton U18 in July 2023. The centre-back has since progressed through Southampton’s age-group structure, moving from the under-18 side to the under-21 squad before making his latest change to Boro U21.

A right-footed defender, Okunola’s preferred position is at the heart of the defence. He is listed as holding English and Nigerian nationality and was born on 3 February 2007.

His arrival comes at the start of the 2026-27 campaign, with Boro U21 competing in Premier League 2 and the National League Cup. Okunola has not yet made an appearance in either competition this season.

The move gives Boro U21 a new centre-back option after Okunola’s year with Southampton’s under-21 team. His most recent club was also competing in Premier League 2, meaning the defender remains in the same league structure following the transfer.

Okunola’s career to date has been centred on academy football, beginning with Chelsea before his move to Southampton. He joined Southampton U18 as a free transfer in July 2023 and spent two seasons within the club’s youth system, first with the under-18s and then with the under-21s.

Boro U21 have now added the teenager to their squad for the new season, with the transfer taking effect on 1 September. The move marks the latest step in Okunola’s progression through under-21 football and his first change of club since leaving Southampton.
