Rising star Assan Ouédraogo: From Schalke’s academy to European interest
Assan Ouédraogo, the latest prodigy from Schalke 04’s renowned youth academy, is generating significant interest among Europe’s top football clubs. Despite a challenging season for Schalke, which narrowly avoided relegation to the third division, Ouédraogo’s emergence has been a beacon of hope for the club.
Born in Mülheim, Germany, to Burkinabe parents, Ouédraogo is the son of former Burkina Faso international Alassane Ouédraogo.

His football journey began at TuS Union 09 Mülheim before joining Schalke 04’s youth academy in 2014.
Over the years, he climbed the ranks, showing promise with stellar performances.
Notably, during the 2021/22 season, he scored seven goals and provided eight assists in 15 appearances, contributing to Schalke’s U17 German championship victory.
From Academy Talent to First-Team Breakthrough
In November 2022, Schalke offered Ouédraogo a training contract, which included the possibility of converting it into a professional contract by May 2024.
Mathias Schöber, director of Schalke’s training and development center, praised Ouédraogo’s attributes, stating, “Assan brings a huge amount to the table for success in professional football: he is big, dynamic, technically skilled, and blessed with a high level of playing intelligence.”
Promoted to the first team for the 2023/24 season, Ouédraogo made an immediate impact.
At just 17 years and 80 days old, he scored in his debut match, becoming Schalke’s youngest ever scorer, surpassing Julian Draxler’s record.
Despite an ankle ligament injury sidelining him for four months, he returned to finish the season strongly, scoring twice in his final four games.
Attributes and Playing Style
Standing at 1.92 meters, Ouédraogo is primarily a box-to-box midfielder known for his versatility and intelligence on the field.
His physicality, combined with excellent ball control and vision, allows him to excel in various midfield roles.
His playing style has drawn comparisons to French international Paul Pogba, noted for his creative flair, dribbling skills, and ability to change direction swiftly in possession.
Ouédraogo’s performances have not gone unnoticed, attracting interest from major European clubs.
Reports suggest that his release clause is set at €20 million, making him a sought-after target.
Among the interested parties are Premier League clubs Chelsea and Brighton, with Liverpool also monitoring his development closely.
Bayern Munich’s sporting director Christoph Freund has reportedly held discussions with Ouédraogo’s representatives.
Transfer to RB Leipzig and International Prospects
Despite widespread speculation, it was RB Leipzig who secured Ouédraogo’s services for €10 million, signing him to a five-year contract until 2029.
During the current season, the 18-year-old midfielder has scored three goals and provided two assists in 17 games, showcasing his potential at the higher levels of competition.
Internationally, Ouédraogo is eligible to represent either Germany or Burkina Faso.
He has already made significant strides with Germany’s youth teams, helping the U17s win the European Championship and earning the bronze medal of the Fritz Walter Prize, awarded by the German Football Federation (DFB) to the best young German footballers.
Future Prospects
As Ouédraogo continues to develop, both club and country will be keenly observing his progress.
With a blend of technical skills, physical prowess, and football intelligence, he is poised for a bright future in European football.
Whether he will commit to Germany’s national team or consider representing Burkina Faso remains to be seen, but his potential to make a significant impact is undeniable.
The coming years will be crucial for Ouédraogo as he navigates the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, with many expecting him to follow in the footsteps of Schalke’s illustrious academy graduates who have made their mark on European football.
