Mothobi Mvala makes emotional Mamelodi Sundowns return after injury lay-off

Mothobi Mvala says returning for Mamelodi Sundowns after almost a year out with injury was an emotional moment and a significant personal achievement.

The versatile defender featured in Sundowns’ latest league match, marking his first appearance in a league fixture since 24 September 2025, when he played against Golden Arrows.

After a prolonged and difficult spell away from competitive football, Mvala said simply being back on the pitch carried particular importance.

“Personally, it was a very important game and an emotional one for me – after so long being outside because of injury, to make my way back in the game, it was a very good feeling for me,” the 33-year-old told Mamelodi Sundowns TV.

Mvala acknowledged that his return did not come in an easy match. He said the opposition posed a threat by looking to attack on the counter, but was satisfied with the way he performed after ensuring he was prepared when his opportunity arrived.

“It was not an easy game against them, relying on the counter-attacks – but I’m happy that I played well,” he said.

“I was prepared, I got an opportunity, and this opportunity found me ready.”

The defender added that he had been waiting for his chance to return and received encouragement from his team-mates after being called upon.

“I have been waiting for it, when the coach called, the guys motivated me when I came in. Ronza [Ronwen Williams] motivated me, you know it was a very good game for me and for the team.”

His comeback gives Sundowns another option during a crucial part of the campaign as the club seeks a stronger domestic season after admitting it did not meet its own expectations last term.

Mvala stressed the importance of collecting points consistently as Sundowns pursue their targets in the league.

“It’s very important to collect points at this time of the season, we know this league isn’t easy,” he said.

He added that the team’s ambitions included producing strong league performances, winning every match, scoring goals and maintaining clean sheets.

“Last season we didn’t do the way we wanted, we have our own goals that we want to achieve as a team – one of them is to do well in the league, every game we play, get three points, scoring goals and keeping clean sheets, it’s very important to us,” said Mvala.

“There’s room for improvement.”
