Relebohile Mofokeng reflects on rare headed goal in Union SG comeback

Relebohile Mofokeng says desire and determination helped him score a rare headed goal as Royal Union Saint-Gilloise recovered from two goals down to beat Cercle Brugge 5-2 in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League on Sunday.

The Bafana Bafana attacking midfielder played the full 90 minutes as Union SG returned to winning ways after being held to a 1-1 league draw by Oud-Heverlee Leuven in their previous match.

Mofokeng continued his strong run of form by putting his side ahead in the 80th minute, rising to meet the ball and directing a well-placed header into the net.

The goal was the South African international’s fourth in the league this season. He then completed an influential performance in stoppage time by supplying the assist for Union SG’s fifth goal, ensuring an emphatic home victory and all three points.

After the final whistle, Mofokeng was asked how he had managed to win the aerial duel despite being considerably smaller than most of the players around him.

“It’s just on your mind, if the desire is there and the mentality is there, you’ll always get the goal,” said Mofokeng, as per Pro League.

“I think I gave my best, but I just have to do more for my team because when the ball is high, I just have to compete for it.”
