Refereeing controversy puts Real Madrid’s Villarreal clash under scrutiny

Real Madrid will face Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu with Isidro Diaz de Mera appointed as referee and Alejandro Muniz in charge of VAR, as the Spanish club seeks a victory to keep pace with Barcelona.

The Technical Committee of Referees announced the appointments just over 24 hours before kick-off. Diaz de Mera, who belongs to the Castilla-La Mancha referees’ association, will take charge on the pitch, while Muniz, from the Galician association, will oversee the video review operation from the VAR room at Las Rozas.

The decisions come amid heightened debate over refereeing following the most recent Madrid derby. Real Madrid supporters voiced their dissatisfaction with several decisions during that match and accused the officials of failing to intervene in a number of controversial incidents.

However, the greatest focus has fallen on Barcelona’s match against Getafe, which takes place several hours before Real Madrid’s game. Trujillo Suarez has been appointed as the VAR official for that fixture.

Real Madrid supporters have previously accused Trujillo Suarez of ignoring calls for Lee Kang-in to be sent off following his challenge on Federico Valverde. They also believe he failed to recommend a red card for Cote Romero after he stepped on Jude Bellingham during the derby.

Real Madrid go into the Villarreal match under pressure to collect three points and maintain their challenge to Barcelona. The latest refereeing controversy has added further tension to a matchday already marked by scrutiny of the officials.
