La Liga referees set to face the cameras in Spanish football transparency overhaul

La Liga referees will begin speaking to television broadcasters and explaining their decisions immediately after selected matches, in a major change to Spanish football’s long-standing media policy.

The initiative will start with the 11th round of the season, which begins this week. According to Spanish radio station Cadena SER, the scheme will initially be introduced gradually, with officials chosen by the Technical Committee of Referees to address the media after two matches in each round.

The agreement brings together La Liga, the Royal Spanish Football Federation and the Spanish referees’ union AESAF. Its stated aim is to improve transparency and give supporters a clearer understanding of the decisions made by match officials.

The arrangement will not be limited to referees in the top division. Officials in the second tier will also take part, carrying out media interviews before and after selected matches as part of an effort to improve the audiovisual presentation of Spanish football.

€500,000 payment linked to media duties

The greater media access comes with a financial arrangement. La Liga has set aside a total audiovisual bonus of €500,000 for referees, following a model already used with clubs in return for their appearances on broadcasting platforms.

Payment of the bonus is dependent on two objectives being met. The first is a meaningful contribution to the commercial and media value of Spanish football content. The second is the preservation of refereeing authority and the strengthening of officials’ public image after years of controversy and accusations.

The process began at the start of the current season, when referees made brief pre-match appearances on broadcasting channels for the first time. Juan Martinez Munuera was among the officials to take part, appearing before the most recent El Clasico. He said referees generally try to avoid the spotlight, but the new policy represents a change to that approach.

The television appearances form part of a wider package of reforms designed to address refereeing controversy in Spain. The measures include publishing the names of the officials assigned to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) room in advance, introducing a weekly programme called “Review Time” to examine disputed incidents, and publicly acknowledging refereeing errors when they are confirmed.

Together, the measures are intended to rebuild trust between supporters and the officials’ room by making the decision-making process more visible.

The fixtures listed alongside the announcement include Barcelona against Deportivo Alaves in La Liga on 31 October 2026, as well as Racing Santander against Real Madrid in La Liga on 1 November 2026.
