Real Madrid turn attention to Bayern Munich youngster Lennart Karl

Real Madrid have turned their attention to Bayern Munich attacking midfielder Lennart Karl, according to a report published on Wednesday, with the Spanish club considering a move for one of Europe’s most highly rated emerging players.

The 18-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last season after an injury to Jamal Musiala during the FIFA Club World Cup gave him the chance to take on a more prominent role. Karl made the most of that opportunity, playing 40 matches for Vincent Kompany’s side, scoring nine goals and providing eight assists.

His form also earned him a place in the Germany squad under former manager Julian Nagelsmann for the World Cup. However, Karl suffered an unexpected muscle injury during a training session with his country and was forced to leave the camp before the tournament began.

According to German newspaper Bild, Karl’s performances have attracted interest from a number of clubs, including Real Madrid. The Spanish club are understood to admire his ability to beat opponents, his vision and his attacking instincts.

The report comes after months of speculation linking Real Madrid with France winger Michael Olise. That deal did not progress, with Bayern Munich refusing to negotiate and making clear that the player was not for sale. Real Madrid also repeatedly denied having any interest in Olise.

A move for Karl would also be difficult to arrange. His contract with Bayern Munich runs until 2029, while the Bundesliga club have made extending his deal one of their highest priorities.

Karl revealed in January that he would like to play for Real Madrid one day. He said Bayern Munich was a “very big club” and that playing for the German side was a dream, but added: “I would like to join Real Madrid one day: it is my dream club, but let’s keep that between us.”

The midfielder was subsequently required to clarify and apologise for those comments. Bayern Munich chief executive Max Eberl said Karl had approached the club the following day and acknowledged that he might have said something inappropriate which could be misunderstood.

Eberl said: “For us, that was the end of it. There was no problem at all. He is performing well on the pitch, feels very comfortable at Bayern Munich and knows exactly what he has here. That is what matters.”
