Real Madrid teenager Yan Diomande receives surprise nod from idol Cristiano Ronaldo

Yan Diomande’s first competitive appearance for Real Madrid has been followed by a remarkable gesture from his childhood hero, with Cristiano Ronaldo following the 19-year-old winger on Instagram.

The social-media connection came shortly after Diomande made his official debut for the Spanish club, completing an unlikely journey for a player who once wrote Ronaldo’s name on the back of his shirt.

TNT Sports shared an image showing Diomande as a child wearing a Manchester United shirt. The name “Ronaldo” had been written on the back in the young Ivorian’s own handwriting.

Ronaldo was Diomande’s idol while growing up, and the Portugal forward also spent a significant part of his career at Real Madrid, where he established much of his legacy. Diomande is now beginning his own career at the same club.

The post from TNT Sports said: “Growing up, Yan Diomande hand-wrote Cristiano Ronaldo’s name on the back of his shirt, as he was his idol ✍️Last night, Ronaldo followed him on Instagram after he made his competitive debut for Real Madrid. Living his dream. ❤️”

Diomande joined Real Madrid after an outstanding 2025-26 campaign with RB Leipzig. He scored 13 goals and provided 10 assists in 36 appearances across all competitions, performances that earned him the award for the Bundesliga’s best young player.

Real Madrid officially announced the signing of the Ivory Coast winger from RB Leipzig on a seven-year contract running until 30 June 2033. The transfer has been described in major reports as potentially the most expensive in the club’s history, with the fee understood to be worth about 125m euros before additional payments.

His arrival forms part of Real Madrid’s plans to build around a new generation of young talent. Diomande is regarded as one of the leading prospects in that project and is working under Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho.

The winger also enhanced his reputation on the international stage with Ivory Coast at the 2026 World Cup. His performances for both club and country helped establish him as one of the most prominent young players in the game before his move to Madrid.

The Instagram follow from Ronaldo adds a personal dimension to what has already been a major step in Diomande’s career. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward was once the player the Ivorian admired most; Diomande is now wearing the Real Madrid shirt Ronaldo made famous and has received a public acknowledgement from his idol after his debut.
