Real Madrid suffer first Jose Mourinho defeat as Real Betis claim dramatic win

Real Madrid suffered their first La Liga defeat under Jose Mourinho’s second spell in charge as Real Betis secured a 1-0 victory in a dramatic fourth-round meeting.

Troy Parrott scored the only goal of the match, converting late in the game to give Real Betis all three points and hand Mourinho his first league loss since returning to the Real Madrid dugout.

The result leaves Real Madrid on nine points in second place, while Real Betis also move to nine points and sit third in the table.

Real Madrid started with an attacking line-up led by France captain Kylian Mbappe and Brazil forward Vinicius Junior. Marc Cucurella made his second successive start, while Isco was named in the Real Betis side against his former club.

The home side began brightly and came close to opening the scoring in the eighth minute. Antony struck a powerful effort towards the Real Madrid goal, but Thibaut Courtois produced a strong save to keep the visitors level.

Real Madrid responded three minutes later. Dean Huijsen met the ball with a well-directed header, only for the Real Betis goalkeeper to make the necessary stop.

Antony again threatened in the 18th minute when he unleashed another fierce shot. Courtois was equal to it once more, preventing Real Betis from taking the lead.

The clearest chance of the first half fell to Mbappe shortly before the interval. Vinicius Junior played the ball to his team-mate, who returned it before shooting wide from in front of goal in the 43rd minute.

Mbappe went close again after the break, testing the Real Betis goalkeeper with a powerful attempt in the 68th minute. The save kept the match goalless as both sides continued to search for a breakthrough.

That breakthrough arrived in the 81st minute. Facundo Bernal’s header was saved by Courtois, but Troy Parrott reacted quickest to the rebound and fired the ball into the Real Madrid net to put Real Betis ahead.

Real Madrid appeared to have equalised six minutes later through substitute Carlos Espi. Just five minutes after coming on, Espi scored with an overhead kick, but the goal was ruled out following a video assistant referee review because of an offside.

The visitors were then awarded a penalty in the third minute of added time after Vinicius Junior was brought down inside the area. Mbappe took responsibility from the spot, but the Real Betis goalkeeper made an excellent save to preserve his side’s advantage.

The victory was Real Betis’ third of the season and condemned Real Madrid to their first defeat of Mourinho’s second period as manager of the club.

Real Madrid will look to respond when they visit Rayo Vallecano in the fifth round of La Liga next Saturday. Real Betis will face Villarreal in their next league fixture on the following Monday.
