Real Madrid confirm Raul Asencio surgery as reports suggest lengthy absence

Real Madrid have announced that defender Raul Asencio will undergo surgery on Thursday after suffering a stress fracture in his right leg.

The club confirmed the procedure on Wednesday through its official website but did not provide a timescale for the 22-year-old’s recovery.

Spanish newspaper Marca reports that Asencio could be sidelined for between two and four months following the operation.

The report says the defender has been affected by the injury since last season. He was forced to step away from action again after experiencing renewed pain in the same area, prompting the decision to proceed with surgery.

The possibility of an operation had already been discussed with Asencio at the end of last season. It was considered as a way of using the summer break to reduce the impact of what was expected to be a lengthy recovery period, but the procedure did not take place at that time.
