Real Betis celebrate La Cartuja victory with pointed response to Mourinho

Real Betis used their 1-0 victory over Real Madrid to mock Jose Mourinho after the Real Madrid manager said the Andalusian side had “won the lottery” following Friday’s dramatic match at La Cartuja.

The game was decided by a late goal, with Betis securing all three points after surviving a series of important moments in the closing stages. Kylian Mbappe missed a penalty and also had a goal disallowed for offside as Real Madrid failed to find a way past their opponents.

Mourinho praised Betis after the final whistle but questioned their approach during the match.

Betis’ official social media account responded with a sarcastic message aimed directly at the Portuguese manager.

“We won the lottery a long time ago… Thank you to our fans for pushing us towards victory,” the club posted.

The wording referred to the Spanish phrase “El gordo”, commonly associated with the main prize in Spain’s national Christmas lottery. Betis accompanied the message with a smiling emoji and applause.

The club continued its online celebrations by highlighting the decisive contribution of goalkeeper Alvaro Valles, who saved Mbappe’s penalty in the 92nd minute.

“90 minutes at La Cartuja are very long…” Betis wrote in another post, underlining the tension of the final moments.

The phrase was a reference to a famous comment made by Juanito, the Real Madrid great, after his side lost 3-1 to Inter Milan in the first leg of their UEFA Cup tie in Italy in 1986. Juanito said at the time: “90 minutes at the Santiago Bernabeu are very long.”

Betis adapted the historic line to suit their own stadium and their successful attempt to hold on for victory against Real Madrid.

The club also praised the performance of Brazilian forward Antony, who produced an impressive display during the match. Betis shared a picture of the player alongside a goat emoji, a symbol often used online to describe an outstanding or exceptional performance.

“We didn’t know today was the aura-farming contest…” the club posted, tagging Antony.

The victory gave Betis an opportunity to celebrate not only the result but also the way they managed the decisive moments of the contest.
