Pyramids FC probe foreign referee option for Zamalek clash
Pyramids FC have stirred fresh debate ahead of their crucial Egyptian Premier League against Zamalek SC, with general coach Mohamed Nagy Gedo revealing the side explored the possibility of appointing foreign referees for the high-stakes encounter.
The two Egyptian heavyweights are set to lock horns on April 23 in the third round of the championship stage of the Egyptian Premier League, a phase where every point carries enormous weight and little room for error.
Clarifying the club’s stance, Gedo revealed that Pyramids did not formally request foreign officials but made inquiries with the Egyptian Football Association regarding the feasibility of such a move. However, time constraints ultimately ruled out the option.
“We did not submit an official request for foreign referees, but we asked about the legal timeframe,” Gedo explained. “They informed us that there simply wasn’t enough time, so the match will be handled by Egyptian referees.”
Despite initially favoring foreign officials to ease the intense pressure surrounding big fixtures, Gedo expressed strong confidence in the quality of local refereeing. He singled out Amin Omar for praise, describing him as the standout performer in the domestic officiating scene.
“Amin Omar is an excellent referee. For me, he is currently the best in Egypt,” Gedo stated, while also noting that the federation has yet to confirm who will officiate the clash.
The coach emphasized that the championship stage leaves no margin for slip-ups—not just for players, but for referees as well. With only six decisive matches to determine the title race, precision and composure will be critical across all fronts.
“These matches are extremely important. There is no time to recover from mistakes,” he stressed. “Just as players must stay focused, referees must also deliver top performances.”
Gedo also hinted at the growing trend among top clubs seeking foreign officials for marquee games, revealing that rivals Al Ahly SC have already taken steps in that direction for one of their fixtures.
As anticipation builds for the Pyramids-Zamalek showdown, the spotlight will not only be on the players but also on the officiating team, with pressure mounting to ensure a fair and controversy-free contest in one of Egypt’s biggest fixtures.
