Ibrahim Maza a late fitness call for Bayer Leverkusen’s Europa opener

Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Ibrahim Maza remains a late fitness decision for Wednesday’s Europa League opener against NK Celje after missing Tuesday’s final training session with an infection.

The 20-year-old has not been ruled out, with the 9 p.m. kick-off allowing extra time for his condition to improve.

Head coach Carles Martinez said the club would monitor Maza closely before deciding whether he can feature. “We will see how he reacts today and how he feels tomorrow,” the Spanish coach explained.

Maza could make more than just the squad if he recovers in time. Martinez confirmed the in-form attacker is a genuine option for the starting lineup, saying: “If he can be in the squad, then of course he will be in the squad. If he can play, he will play.”

Leverkusen kept Maza out of team training on Tuesday partly to reduce the risk of infection spreading among teammates. His availability would be particularly valuable against a Celje side expected to defend deeply, as Maza’s close control and ability to operate in tight spaces could help unlock the visitors.

If he fails to recover, Afonso Moreira, Malik Tillman and Moussa Diaby are alternatives for Leverkusen’s attacking three.
