Profligate Guinea left to rue missed chances in narrow Northern Ireland defeat

Tom Atcheson endured the full spectrum of emotions as Northern Ireland ground out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Guinea in the searing Spanish heat.

The defender’s early strike settled the international challenge match at the Estadio Municipal de La Línea de la Concepción in the Cádiz region, a venue sitting barely a stone’s throw from Gibraltar. Yet his evening would take a dramatic turn before the night was out.

Michael O’Neill’s men were forced to navigate the closing 23 minutes a man light after Atcheson was dismissed.

Until that moment, the visitors had largely dictated proceedings, stretching the game with expansive football and fashioning openings, though Guinea carried their own threat throughout and grew increasingly dangerous as the contest wore on.

A youthful experiment

The result owed much to inspired goalkeeping. Pierce Charles produced a brace of smart saves, while substitute stopper Luke Southwood conjured a stunning stop deep in added time to deny the west Africans a deserved leveller.

O’Neill rang the changes, making six alterations to the side that drew 1-1 with Wales back in March, with only Shea Charles, Ciaron Brown, Justin Devenny, Jamie Donley and Isaac Price keeping their places.

The reshuffle produced something historic: at an average age of just 22.1 years, this was the youngest Northern Ireland starting XI since the Second World War, with Liverpool teenager Kieran Morrison, 19, handed a debut from the off.

Atcheson strikes early

Northern Ireland made the perfect start. Earning only his second cap on his first senior start, Atcheson broke the deadlock in the ninth minute when Paul Smyth and Price combined neatly down the right, the latter delivering an inviting cross that the defender tucked away from close range.

Guinea responded with intent. Charles tipped a Mohamed Toure effort over the bar, Ruairi McConville threw himself in front of an Abdoul Traore attempt, and debutant Ibrahima Bangoura drew another save before Traore blazed the rebound over. The west Africans, ranked 81st in the world to Northern Ireland’s 70th, enjoyed spells of pressure without finding a way through.

Drama after the break

The second half followed a similar pattern, the visitors in control yet living dangerously. Guinea went desperately close just before the hour, Southwood smothering Ibrahima Fofana’s header before McConville and Atcheson combined to scramble clear off the line.

The complexion changed on 72 minutes. Atcheson, having clipped the lively Traore as he surged goalwards, was shown red for a last-man challenge, leaving his side to dig in. They almost extended their lead through substitute Jamie Reid, only for Sylla to save superbly.

Traore’s late penalty appeal was rightly waved away before Southwood had the final word, somehow palming a thunderous Lancinet Kourouma strike onto the crossbar to preserve the slender advantage.

Next up, O’Neill’s youngsters face a daunting assignment away to World Cup-bound France on Monday at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy near Lille, where the world’s top-ranked side await an altogether sterner examination.
