Poland take early Group A lead after Argentina own goal in U20 World Cup

Poland made a convincing start to the Women’s U20 World Cup by defeating Argentina 3-0 in their opening Group A match at Arena Katowice on Saturday, 5 September 2026.

The hosts settled quickly and produced an efficient first-half display, taking control of the contest before the break. Poland’s territorial dominance was rewarded in the 26th minute when Oliwia Zwiazek opened the scoring.

Argentina’s task became even more difficult four minutes later. Annika Paz turned the ball into her own net in the 30th minute, handing Poland a second goal and leaving the Albiceleste facing a substantial deficit before half-time.

Poland continued to control the match after the interval and extended their advantage when Maja Zielinska scored the team’s third goal. The result secured a comfortable victory for the home side in the tournament opener.

Argentina attempted to respond and managed to create shooting opportunities against the Polish defence. However, the South American side struggled to make those efforts count, with their finishing in the decisive moments proving insufficient to trouble Poland.

The three points put Poland temporarily at the top of Group A. Their position will remain provisional until the other group fixture between Benin and Mexico has been played.

For Argentina, the defeat leaves them with work to do after a difficult opening match. The own goal compounded the damage caused by Poland’s strong first-half performance, while the failure to convert chances after the break prevented them from mounting a serious comeback.

Poland, by contrast, combined early attacking purpose with defensive control to secure the clearest possible start. Zwiazek’s opener established their advantage, Paz’s unfortunate intervention doubled it and Zielinska’s second-half strike completed the scoring.

The result also sets the context for Benin’s next involvement in the competition, with the West African side due to face Argentina after their match against Mexico. Poland will wait for the outcome of that game knowing that their three points have given them an early advantage in the group.

Although the tournament is only beginning, Poland’s margin of victory provides an immediate boost to their hopes in Group A. Argentina will need to improve in front of goal and recover from the early setback when their campaign continues.
