Pirates consider further defensive signing as transfer deadline approaches

Orlando Pirates could make another signing before the transfer window closes on 22 September, with the right-back position reportedly an area the club may still look to strengthen.

The Buccaneers have already been among the busiest clubs in the transfer market, adding significantly to their squad since Abdeslam Ouaddou took charge. However, those reinforcements have coincided with several departures, leaving the club potentially in need of greater defensive depth as the season gathers pace.

The latest notable exit was Deano van Rooyen, who joined rivals Mamelodi Sundowns after two seasons with Pirates. Before that, Thabiso Lebitso moved to Stellenbosch FC, while young defender Siyabonga Ndlozi signed for Sekhukhune United. Tshepho Mashiloane is also spending the campaign at Sekhukhune United on loan.

Kamogelo Sebelebele has operated as Pirates’ preferred right-back during the early part of the season. The 24-year-old, however, is naturally an attacking player rather than a specialist defender, which could encourage the club to consider another option in that position.

Pirates have already reached the MTN8 final and are attempting to add another trophy to their collection. Their CAF Champions League campaign has also begun, with the club seeking to reach the group stage. Alongside those commitments, they face a demanding schedule in the Betway Premiership and other domestic competitions.

The need for additional cover has been highlighted by a series of injuries. Captain Nkosinathi Sibisi, Andre de Jong, Thalente Mbatha, Evidence Makgopa, Sihle Nduli, Masindi Nemtajela, Kabelo Dlamini and, most recently, Gamphani Lungu have all been affected.

Tshepang Moremi has only recently returned to the squad, further underlining the pressure on Ouaddou’s available players. With Pirates expected to compete across several fronts in the coming months, another defensive addition could provide important protection against further injuries and a congested fixture list.

Matuludi remains a possible option

One player whose name has previously been associated with Pirates is Thabang Matuludi.

The 27-year-old has not played for Polokwane City this season, prompting questions over his position at the club. Pirates have been credited with an interest in the defender in the past, although Polokwane City coach Willy Maloto has continued to state publicly that Matuludi remains part of his plans.

His situation could therefore become one to watch before the transfer deadline. Matuludi would offer experience at right-back and was included in the Bafana Bafana squad for the recent FIFA World Cup.

Pirates may decide to pursue Matuludi, target another defender or retain their current options. No decision has been confirmed, but the club’s workload and the window’s 22 September closing date mean further movement cannot be ruled out.

The Buccaneers have already reshaped their squad substantially under Ouaddou. Whether that process includes one final addition will become clearer as the deadline draws nearer.
