Phili to Kaizer Chiefs? Hunt expects transfer decision ‘in a day or two’ as talks accelerate

Stellenbosch FC head coach Gavin Hunt says a decision on the future of highly-rated winger Langelihle Phili could be made “in a day or two”, with Kaizer Chiefs understood to be edging closer to an agreement for the rising star.

Hunt was speaking amid intensifying speculation that Phili is on the verge of a big-money move to Naturena, after a protracted pursuit by Chiefs during the current transfer window.

The Soweto club have already had two sizeable offers turned down by the Winelands side, but negotiations between the Premier Soccer League rivals are now believed to have moved forward significantly after weeks of deadlock.

Hunt expects swift resolution

Asked directly about Phili’s situation during the Betway Premiership launch in Johannesburg on Wednesday, Hunt made clear Stellenbosch’s reluctance to lose one of their standout young talents, while hinting strongly that contractual realities may force the club’s hand.

“Obviously we don’t want to lose the player (Phili),” Hunt told journalists.

“He’s one of the hot properties in South Africa, but contractual circumstances come into play,” he continued, acknowledging the factors pushing the move closer.

Hunt said he expects the speculation to be resolved shortly.

“There’s been a lot of media speculation; I’m sure in the next day or two we’ll hear some more. I don’t know [what’s going to happen]; right now I came to the press conference and another [Stellies] player got sold.”

Although he stopped short of confirming that a deal has been finalised, Hunt’s refusal to dismiss the transfer, coupled with his reference to ongoing sales at the club, has been interpreted as a clear sign that Phili’s exit is now more likely than not.

Chiefs’ persistence signals rebuilding intent

Kaizer Chiefs’ sustained pursuit of Phili has underlined how central the 21-year-old is seen to be in their long-term rebuild.

The Glamour Boys have tracked the attacker throughout the window, viewing him as a key component in reshaping the squad after several difficult seasons.

Their determination has already been evident in the size and frequency of their bids, with two major offers rejected before the latest round of talks.

Amakhosi’s willingness to keep returning to the table has been read as a statement of intent, with the club prepared to invest heavily – both financially and in squad assets – to secure Phili’s services.

Msimango and Du Preez linked to player-plus-cash deal

In a significant twist aimed at breaking the impasse, internal sources suggest that Kaizer Chiefs have now structured a player-plus-cash proposal to convince Stellenbosch to sell.

Defender Given Msimango and forward Ashley Du Preez have reportedly been included in the package, bolstering the financial fee on offer with two established Premier Soccer League performers.

The inclusion of Msimango and Du Preez is understood to have moved talks into their final phase, with the revised offer viewed as more attractive by Stellenbosch as they weigh up the loss of one of the country’s most sought-after youngsters.

The proposed multi-million Rand deal, which would see Phili move to Naturena and two senior Chiefs players head in the opposite direction, is believed to be close to completion, with an official announcement anticipated once the final details are agreed.

For now, though, Hunt insists he is still waiting for clarity, even as the sense grows that Stellenbosch are preparing to say goodbye to one of their brightest prospects.
