Paul Pogba comments on Mbappe-Dembele partnership debate
As France’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Senegal on June 16 approaches, discussions continue over how coach Didier Deschamps should set up his attack.
One of the biggest talking points is whether Ousmane Dembele and Kylian Mbappe can effectively operate together in central attacking roles. The topic was recently put to former France midfielder Paul Pogba, who is familiar with both players from their time with the national team.
Announced as one of the Cup’s top favorites, France brings a terrifying attack. Mbappe, Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembele… Didier Deschamps is more armed than ever, but the right organization must still be found. Against Northern Ireland, Mbappé played as the central striker while Ballon d’Or winner Dembele was number 10. But this central pairing lacks unanimity, with many calling for Mbappe on the left channel to let Dembele play alone in front as he does at PSG.
Pogba, a guest on RMC’s Rothen s’enflamme, was asked about the Mbappe-Dembele association. He replied: “Dembele and Mbappe can play together in the center? I’m not a coach. For soon maybe? No, no! (Laughs) That’s not the objective for now. I’m not a coach but I remember a match at their beginning, against England. Kylian and Ousmane were dangerous. They are great players so they know how to play together”.
Meanwhile, Dembele defended Mbappe against harsh criticism. “We’ve been very unfair with him. We overdo the criticism toward Kylian, because he’s an incredible player. He’s someone wonderful off the pitch, as I’ve known him for a long time. Sometimes we exaggerate in the criticism simply because it’s Kylian Mbappe. We shouldn’t be so hard on him. Whether he laces his shoes or not, whether he raises his socks or not… It’s too much. Because he remains a human being and a player of exceptional quality. Anyway, here in France, he gets very well with us. He’s a leader, our team’s captain and a very important player”.
