Patrick Vieira begins first international management role with Senegal
The Senegal Football Federation has confirmed the appointment of Patrick Vieira as head coach of the Lions of Teranga, giving the former France international his first job in charge of a national team.
The announcement was made on Tuesday through the FSF’s official Instagram account. Vieira’s formal presentation will take place at a later date, with the federation saying that the date will be announced shortly.
Vieira, 50, returns to management after several months without a club. He has been out of work since leaving Genoa in November, having overseen the Serie A side for part of the season.
The appointment represents a new stage in the coaching career of the 1998 World Cup winner, who has previously worked with clubs in France, England, Italy and the United States. His managerial experience includes spells at New York City, Nice, Crystal Palace and Strasbourg, as well as his recent period with Genoa.
However, the Senegal post will be Vieira’s first opportunity to lead a senior international side. The former midfielder, who has Senegalese heritage, will now take charge of one of Africa’s leading football nations.
His arrival comes with Senegal already established as a team accustomed to competing on the international stage. Vieira will be expected to continue those ambitions as he begins his first assignment in international management.
The French-born coach succeeds the previous Senegal coaching staff. His appointment marks a significant change in direction for the Lions of Teranga and opens a new chapter in his career, with the former France international moving from club management to the demands of leading a national team.
Vieira’s managerial journey has taken him through a number of different football environments. He began building his coaching profile with New York City before returning to Europe for senior roles at Nice and Crystal Palace. His later work at Strasbourg and Genoa added further experience before his departure from the Italian club last November.
The Senegal Football Federation has not yet announced the date of Vieira’s official presentation. Until then, the appointment remains the federation’s latest confirmed move as it prepares to place the national side under new leadership.
For Vieira, the role provides a return to the dugout following his period without a team and gives him the chance to work with a national squad for the first time. For Senegal, it brings in a coach with experience at several prominent clubs and a personal connection to the country, as the Lions of Teranga enter this new phase under his guidance.
