The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has announced the immediate dismissal of Patrick Mabedi as head coach of the Malawi national football team, the Flames, following the team’s recent failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In an official statement, FAM confirmed that Mabedi’s contract termination aligns with decisions taken by the association’s Emergency Committee, which convened on 28th October 2024.

The statement read, “Football Association of Malawi (FAM) wishes to inform all its stakeholders and the public that it has terminated the contract of the Malawi Senior Men’s National football team Coach Patrick Mabedi with immediate effect.”

The decision comes in response to recommendations from FAM’s Technical Committee, which cited the Flames’ poor recent performance as a key factor.

Malawi’s inability to secure a place in the upcoming AFCON tournament ultimately underscored the need for change at the helm of the national squad.

FAM stated, “This is in line with resolutions of the FAM Emergency Committee held on 28th October 2024.

The decision is based on the recommendations from the Technical Committee following the dismal performance of the Flames and subsequent failure to qualify for the Total Energies AFCON 2025.”

While expressing regret over the necessity of this decision, FAM assured the public and other stakeholders that the national team’s competitive agenda will continue uninterrupted.

A temporary technical team is set to lead the Flames in their upcoming competitions while FAM searches for a long-term replacement.

The association’s statement affirmed, “Football Association of Malawi would like to assure all stakeholders that it will ensure seamless continuity in the Flames’ undertakings in the various competitions.

FAM will be putting together a temporary technical panel that will lead the team into the next assignments until a substantive replacement is identified.”

Malawi’s football association also appealed for continued support from fans and partners as the national team navigates this period of transition.

We believe that stakeholders and the public will keep on rallying behind the Flames and continue to support our beloved National Team,” FAM added, underscoring the importance of unity during this time.

Finally, FAM acknowledged Mabedi’s efforts and contributions during his time with the team, extending best wishes for his future.

Football Association of Malawi is grateful for the contribution made by Coach Mabedi during the time he served as Flames’ Coach and wishes the tactician all the best in his future endeavors,” the statement concluded.

Mabedi’s dismissal highlights a critical juncture for the Flames as they aim to regroup and revitalize their competitive standing on the continental stage.
