Paris Saint-Germain opener relocated to Rennes after Parc des Princes pitch damage

Paris Saint-Germain’s Ligue 1 meeting with Rennes on Sunday has been moved from the Parc des Princes to Rennes’ stadium because of the poor condition of the Paris club’s pitch.

The match was scheduled to be played in Paris as one of the opening weekend’s major fixtures, but severe heat in the French capital caused significant damage to the playing surface. That raised doubts over whether the game could go ahead at its original venue and time.

According to RMC, the Ligue de Football Professionnel had been considering two options if the Parc des Princes pitch was deemed unsuitable: postponing the fixture or transferring it to Rennes while keeping it on the scheduled date.

After reviewing the available alternatives, the league opted for the second solution. The game will therefore take place in Rennes on Sunday evening.

Paris Saint-Germain reportedly tried to find another suitable stadium in the Ile-de-France region, but were unable to secure an alternative venue capable of hosting the fixture.

The Paris club then contacted Rennes to ask whether the match could be staged at the home side’s ground. Rennes agreed, despite the considerable logistical and organisational work required at short notice.

Rennes had been keen to avoid a postponement, which would have placed further pressure on an already busy schedule. The club is also preparing for its European commitments and the start of the new season.

However, moving the match to Rennes creates a number of immediate challenges for the hosts. Ticket sales will have to be reorganised, along with hospitality and VIP arrangements. The change may also affect season-ticket holders who are unable to attend the fixture at short notice.

Rennes will additionally have to deal with costs already incurred in preparation for a match that was expected to be played in Paris. Those expenses include travel, accommodation and other logistical arrangements.

The biggest unresolved issue concerns the return fixture between the two clubs.

Rennes insists that Sunday’s move does not constitute an official “exchange” of the two league matches. The club’s position is that the first meeting has simply been transferred to its stadium as an emergency measure because the Parc des Princes pitch is not fit for use.

On that basis, Rennes believes the return match should still be played at its own ground, as originally set out in the Ligue de Football Professionnel’s schedule and regulations. In its view, relocating Sunday’s fixture does not automatically mean that the home venues for the two games have been formally swapped.

The competition committee of the Ligue de Football Professionnel is expected to examine the situation and make the final decision. Rennes intends to defend its position and retain the right to host the return meeting under the original fixture schedule.

The decision has created uncertainty before one of the first major matches of the new Ligue 1 season, with the condition of the Parc des Princes pitch prompting both an immediate venue change and a wider dispute over how the two fixtures should be administered.
