Barcelona turn to Lautaro Martinez after Alvarez blow, but Inter barrier remains
Barcelona have made an initial enquiry about Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez as they broaden their search for a new striker, although the Argentina forward is not currently the subject of formal negotiations.
The 28-year-old has been linked with a move to Camp Nou after Barcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez became 99% impossible. However, their interest in Martinez has so far stopped at an assessment of his situation rather than developing into a serious attempt to sign him.
According to reports from respected journalist Matteo Moretto, Barcelona contacted Inter to ask about Martinez but did not progress beyond that preliminary enquiry. No formal talks have taken place between the two clubs.
A deal would be difficult because of Martinez’s importance to Inter. He is not simply an established striker who could be made available in the transfer market; he is the Italian club’s captain, a central figure in their sporting project and one of the most important players in the squad.
There have been no indications that Inter are prepared to part with their leading forward, who has established himself as one of the most influential figures at the club.
Barcelona’s enquiry forms part of a wider search for alternatives following the setback involving Alvarez. The Manchester City forward had been the principal target identified by sporting director Deco and manager Hansi Flick, but Atletico Madrid closed the door on a possible deal by setting a release clause of 490m euros.
The Catalan club have since sounded out a number of attacking options. Georgiy Mikautadze of Villarreal is regarded as one of Deco’s preferred possibilities, although there are doubts about whether Flick is fully convinced by that move.
Ayoze Perez was also considered as a less expensive alternative, but that option quickly lost momentum. Moretto has said the Spain forward is not currently being considered by Barcelona.
A separate breaking-news post attributed to Gerard Romero claimed:
“🚨 BREAKING: BARCELONA WILL GO FOR LAUTARO MARTINEZ 💣🔵🔴Hansi Flicks wants to sign the Inter forward, reports@gerardromero🗞️”It will be a very difficult deal to pull off, but Lautaro is Barca’s number-one priority, and the club…pic.twitter.com/O0kW1bOY4Z”
Martinez’s proven quality, experience in major competitions and leadership would give Barcelona’s attack an immediate boost if a transfer could be arranged. Nevertheless, the current information points to a clear distinction between making an enquiry about a player and pursuing his signing with determination.
That more advanced stage has not yet been reached in the case of Inter captain Martinez, despite his name returning to the centre of Barcelona’s recruitment plans.
The developments have prompted further discussion among football supporters, with readers also invited to debate the latest news and transfer possibilities on the Kooora forums.
