Ekstein penalty sends AmaZulu FC into Carling Knockout quarter-finals

AmaZulu FC reached the Carling Knockout quarter-finals with a 1-0 victory over Kruger United on Sunday afternoon, Hendrick Ekstein’s second-half penalty proving decisive.

Arthur Zwane’s side were strengthened by the return of club captain Riaan Hanamub at left-back as they looked to carry their impressive league form into the cup. Kruger United entered the match after returning to winning ways against Chippa United last weekend.

The hosts made an aggressive start, with Sipho Sibiya and Khetukuthula Ndlovu both booked for late challenges inside the opening 10 minutes. Sibiya was fortunate to avoid a second caution after committing another foul soon afterwards.

AmaZulu gradually took control of the first half but struggled to convert their opportunities. Kruger United also created a clear opening after 17 minutes, although Mancoba Zwane lifted his close-range effort over the crossbar.

The chances continued at both ends. Zwane tested AmaZulu goalkeeper Olwethu Mzimela with a free-kick, which was saved, before Mthethwa went close for the visitors with a first-time volley that flew over the bar.

The pace remained high after the interval, and Kruger United created the first opportunity of the second half shortly before the hour mark. Ngema was found inside the 18-yard area, but Mzimela denied the attacker with an excellent save.

AmaZulu made their pressure count in the 75th minute after a handball by Tavengwa inside the penalty area. Ekstein took responsibility from the spot and calmly converted to put his side in front.

Kruger United pushed for an equaliser, but Mzimela produced another outstanding save in second-half stoppage time to prevent what appeared certain to be a leveller. His intervention preserved the win and secured AmaZulu’s place in the last eight.

AmaZulu FC’s next five fixtures are against Golden Arrows at home, Kaizer Chiefs away, Milford at home, Sekhukhune United away and Chippa United away.

Kruger United will next face Richards Bay at home, followed by away matches against Polokwane City and Golden Arrows. They will then host Mamelodi Sundowns before welcoming Siwelele FC.
