Kenenisa Bekele, the winner of the Paris Marathon on Sunday in his debut race over the distance, set a new event record with a time of 2 hours, 5 minutes, and 4 seconds. The Ethiopian athlete also expressed his belief that the world record is within reach.
Bekele stated, “It’s a possibility if I have more time to prepare. For this marathon, I only had three months of training, which isn’t sufficient.” He elaborated, “After focusing on 5,000 and 10,000 meters, transitioning to the marathon requires different and longer training to adapt to the change in pace. I’m confident that for my second marathon, I’ll perform better and perhaps even challenge the world record.”
