Paris cafe footage puts Walid Regragui’s coaching future under scrutiny

Walid Regragui’s appearance alongside Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in Paris has prompted speculation about the former Morocco manager’s next move.

A video shared widely on social media appears to show Regragui sitting with Sheikh Tamim inside a cafe in the French capital. The meeting attracted particular attention because Regragui is not currently linked to a coaching position.

The footage quickly led supporters and social-media users to suggest that Regragui could be considered for a role in Qatar. Such a position could involve taking charge of the Qatar national team or accepting a different technical responsibility within the country’s football structure.

There has, however, been no official confirmation from either side that the meeting was connected to a possible appointment, negotiations or a shared sporting project.

The speculation comes as Qatar’s national team faces a period of reassessment. Qatar failed to progress beyond the group stage at both the 2022 and 2026 World Cups, a record that could encourage officials to consider changes and alternative options within the coaching set-up.

The team is currently managed by Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui, whose contract with Qatar runs until February 2027. That agreement means any suggestion of an immediate change in the national-team post remains unconfirmed.

The Paris meeting itself may have been entirely private and unrelated to Regragui’s professional future. No details have been released about the purpose of the encounter, and the video offers no evidence that a coaching agreement or formal discussions took place.

Regragui is currently without a coaching assignment, which has helped fuel interest in his next destination. His presence with Sheikh Tamim has therefore been interpreted by some observers as a possible indication of contact with Qatari football authorities, although that remains speculation.

For now, the only confirmed details are that the two men were seen together in a Paris cafe and that the footage circulated online. Neither Regragui nor Qatar has announced a new role for the Moroccan, while Lopetegui remains under contract as Qatar’s head coach until February 2027.
