Pape Matar Sarr has been crowned the Best Newcomer in West African Football at the inaugural CIS Awards, held on 20 June 2025 in Conakry, Guinea.
The 22-year-old Senegalese international claimed the honour ahead of local favourite Alynho Haïdara of Guinea, earning recognition for a standout season with English club Tottenham Hotspur.
Despite Tottenham’s difficult Premier League campaign, which ended with a disappointing 17th-place finish, Sarr’s personal performances were widely praised throughout the 2024–2025 season.
In a year marked by inconsistency for Spurs, Sarr emerged as a vital figure under manager Ange Postecoglou. The midfielder featured in 55 matches across all competitions, delivering three assists and anchoring the midfield with energy and discipline.
His efforts culminated in continental glory as he helped Tottenham lift the UEFA Europa League — the club’s first European title in four decades.
Sarr’s contribution in the final against Manchester United was instrumental, with his composure and tactical awareness earning plaudits from analysts and supporters alike.
In winning the Europa League, he became the first Senegalese footballer to claim a title in the competition’s history, further solidifying his status as one of the region’s brightest talents.
A key member of Senegal’s national team, with whom he won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2022, Sarr’s growth at club level has mirrored his increasing influence on the international stage.
His latest accolade is seen as a testament to both his consistency and his potential to become one of African football’s leading figures in the years ahead.
The CIS Awards, organised by CIS Media, were launched to honour exceptional talent across West African football, with the Conakry ceremony marking the event’s first edition.
A total of 18 awards were presented, recognising achievements across playing, coaching, club management, and football development.
Côte d’Ivoire dominated the awards night, securing four wins from seven nominations. Among the Ivorian winners was Yacine Idriss Diallo, who was named Best Manager.
Domestic giants ASEC Mimosas claimed the Best Club award, while Zambro Sport Management received the honour for Best Player Agency.
Franck Yannick Kessié, known not only for his performances on the pitch but also for his philanthropic efforts, was awarded the Social Impact Action prize.
Elsewhere, Serhou Guirassy was voted Best Player following his prolific season in European football, while Moussa “Pinpin” Camara of Sima SC received the Best Goalkeeper award for his performances in domestic and regional competitions.
The evening was seen as a significant step forward in recognising homegrown excellence and elevating the visibility of West African football talent on the global stage.
With his latest award, Pape Matar Sarr now finds himself firmly at the heart of that emerging narrative — a symbol of promise and a beacon for future generations of West African players.
