Pape Matar Sarr ruled out of Tottenham's Premier League opener at Brentford

Pape Matar Sarr will miss Tottenham’s opening Premier League fixture against Brentford on Sunday after suffering a minor injury, manager Roberto De Zerbi has confirmed.

The Senegal midfielder will not be available for Spurs’ trip to Brentford, scheduled for 16:30 GMT on 22 August, as Tottenham begin their new league campaign.

De Zerbi confirmed Sarr’s absence during a press conference on Friday, explaining that the midfielder is experiencing a slight pain that has prevented him from being involved in the opening match.

The Tottenham manager was nevertheless reassuring about the nature of the problem and indicated that it is not serious.

Sarr’s absence represents an early setback for Tottenham, with the Senegal international unable to start the new Premier League season alongside his team-mates.

The midfielder remains an important part of Tottenham’s squad, but his immediate focus will now be on recovering from the issue that has ruled him out of the Brentford match.

The situation comes as Sarr’s longer-term future at Tottenham is also attracting attention.

The 23-year-old is under contract with Spurs until 2030, but his name has reportedly emerged as a target for Galatasaray.

The Turkish club are looking to strengthen their midfield and have been linked with the Senegal international.

At the same time, competition for midfield positions at Tottenham has increased following the arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.

That increased competition could become an important factor in Sarr’s situation as the season progresses.

For now, however, Tottenham continue to count on the Senegalese midfielder despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.

Sarr’s immediate absence means he will have to watch from the sidelines as Spurs begin their Premier League campaign at Brentford.

De Zerbi’s comments suggest that the injury is not expected to be a major problem, but the midfielder’s condition will nevertheless be monitored as Tottenham prepare for the matches ahead.

His situation could become increasingly significant in the coming weeks, both because of his role within the squad and the reported interest from Galatasaray.

Tottenham will therefore begin the season without Sarr, while the Senegal international looks to recover from the minor problem that has kept him out of the opening fixture.

With his contract running until 2030, Tottenham currently remain committed to the midfielder, although the developments surrounding his future will be closely watched as the transfer window progresses.
