Owen Da Gama returns to Vondwe Xi Bullets as technical director

Former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana coach Owen Da Gama has returned to Vondwe Xi Bullets as the Limpopo ABC Motsepe League club’s new technical director.

The appointment brings Da Gama back to a familiar environment several months after he became a free agent following his departure from Botswana Premier League side Black Lions.

Vondwe Xi Bullets confirmed the experienced coach’s return this week as they prepare for the new season and set their sights on promotion to the National First Division.

Da Gama previously worked at the club during the 2024/25 season, when he served as head coach. His experience and standing in South African football earned him the admiration of the club, who have now brought him back in a different capacity.

As technical director, Da Gama will be responsible for helping strengthen the club’s football structures, contributing to the development of players and supporting the team’s promotion campaign.

The move marks Da Gama’s latest return to Limpopo, where he has worked extensively during his coaching career. He joined Black Lions after leaving Limpopo-based Magesi FC, but spent only a few months with the Botswana club before returning to South Africa in December.

Da Gama had taken charge of Black Lions, also known as Di Bata Dia Rora, in August after the club secured the status of VTM. His departure left him without a club and he subsequently spent several months waiting for another opportunity.

Magesi FC, meanwhile, have since been relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Before agreeing to return to Vondwe Xi Bullets, Da Gama had been linked with the coaching position at Durban City. That proposed move did not come to fruition, leaving the veteran coach without a new appointment after his exit from Black Lions.

He will now work behind the scenes at Vondwe Xi Bullets, drawing on his experience at professional and developmental levels to help shape the club’s football operations.

The club are hoping Da Gama’s knowledge will help them improve their playing structures and prepare a squad capable of competing for promotion. His previous spell as head coach means he already understands the club’s environment and ambitions.

Da Gama has held a number of coaching positions during a long career in South African football, including a spell with Orlando Pirates and work with Bafana Bafana. His return to Vondwe Xi Bullets gives him the chance to continue contributing to the club while helping guide its push towards the National First Division.

The appointment also allows the Limpopo side to benefit from his experience both on and off the pitch as they build towards the new campaign.
