Our chances of qualifying for 2026 World Cup are slim but possible – Nigeria official Alhaji Dikko
Chairman of Nigeria’s National Sports Commission, Alhaji Dikko, says their chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup are slim but insists everything is possible.
The Super Eagles currently trail group leaders South Africa by six points and are three points behind second-placed Benin, with only two games remaining.
To stand any chance of qualification, Nigeria must hope that Bafana Bafana lose both of their remaining fixtures against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
Additionally, they need Benin to drop points in their final two matches.
Looking ahead to next month’s decisive fixtures against Lesotho and Benin, Dikko admits that the chances of qualification are very slim, but maintains that anything is possible.
“As for the World Cup, we all know where we are. When we came on board, we only had three points out of 12,” Dikko said, according to Pulse Sports.
“The Commission and the NFF put their heads together, and now we have eight points in the last four games. If we had got these points, we would have been talking of qualifying for the World Cup.
“At this moment, we have to be factual about it. Based on the number, it is basically out of our hands. We just have to win our games and see where that would take us,” he added.
“But we are still hopeful because it’s football, and someone will lose, and anything can happen. Factually, it is not in our hands, and we just have to keep doing what we have to do by supporting the team,” he added.
