Otto Addo begins FIFA World Cup Technical Study Group role as sole African representative

Former Ghana head coach Otto Addo has officially commenced his duties as a member of FIFA’s Technical Study Group (TSG) for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming the only African representative on the prestigious panel.

Addo is part of an elite 11-member team tasked with analysing tactical developments, coaching innovations and team performances throughout the tournament. The group will also play a key role in determining the winners of several major individual awards at the World Cup.

The FIFA Technical Study Group serves as one of the tournament’s most important analytical bodies, producing detailed reports on emerging trends in the game and offering insights that contribute to football development across the globe.

The former Black Stars coach will work alongside several renowned football figures, including Tobin Heath of the United States, Germany’s Jürgen Klinsmann, Wales’ Jayne Ludlow, Northern Ireland’s Michael O’Neill, Brazil legend Gilberto Silva, Denmark’s Jon Dahl Tomasson, Costa Rica’s Paulo Wanchope, Netherlands’ Aron Winter and Argentina’s Pablo Zabaleta.

The panel will be overseen by FIFA Senior Football Expert Pascal Zuberbühler and FIFA’s Lead of Football Performance Insights, Tom Gardner. They will be supported by a team of football analysts, data engineers, data scientists and performance analysts operating from Miami, Dallas and Manchester in the United Kingdom.

Addo’s appointment places him among some of the most respected football minds in the world and underlines FIFA’s confidence in his technical expertise and understanding of the modern game.

The role comes just weeks after his tenure as Ghana coach ended following disappointing friendly results against Austria and Germany in March. Despite those setbacks, Addo successfully guided the Black Stars to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana will compete in Group L at the tournament, where they are set to face Panama, England and Croatia as they seek to advance to the knockout stages.
