Orlando Pirates extend unbeaten run with 4-0 win over Kruger United

Orlando Pirates maintained their dominant start to the season as Yanela Mbuthuma ended his goal drought with a late double in a convincing 4-0 victory over struggling Kruger United at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday.

The win extended Pirates’ unbeaten league run to 18 matches, with their last defeat coming in February last season when they were beaten 2-1 by Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Buccaneers now sit three points clear at the top of the table. However, Sundowns can move level on 13 points if they beat newly promoted Milford FC at Loftus on Wednesday.

For Kruger United, the result leaves them bottom of the log after four defeats and one draw. Their difficult start has been compounded by a lack of goals, with coach Abram Mongoya’s side having scored only twice so far.

Pirates made the ideal start when they were awarded a penalty in the fourth minute. Kamogelo Sebelebele was brought down inside the area and Gamphani Lungu converted from the spot, sending goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari the wrong way.

The goal was Lungu’s second in the league this season, but his evening was cut short after he was involved in a collision with a Kruger United player nine minutes into the match. He was taken off on a stretcher and replaced by Oswin Appollis four minutes later.

United threatened on limited occasions, and one of their rare attacking moments almost produced an equaliser before half-time. In the 40th minute, Pirates defender Tshepang Moremi cleared an effort from Aphiwe Mphothe off the line.

Pirates increased their advantage eight minutes after the break. Appollis released Boitumelo Radiopane, who finished past Ntwari to put the visitors in firm control.

Mbuthuma then took centre stage in the closing stages. After struggling to find the net before Tuesday’s fixture, he scored twice to complete a 4-0 victory and provide a timely boost to his confidence.

The result also adds to the pressure on Kruger United, who remain without a league win and have scored just two goals in their opening five matches.

Pirates will now switch their focus to continental action. Their next fixture is a Champions League preliminary stage meeting with La Cure Waves of Mauritius at the weekend.

In the other league match played on Tuesday, Stellenbosch FC and Durban City shared the points after a goalless draw.
