Orlando Pirates defender Tapelo Xoki’s wait for a return stretches beyond 16 months

Tapelo Xoki has now gone more than 16 months without playing for Orlando Pirates, despite working his way back from a serious injury and being available for selection again.

The 31-year-old last featured for Pirates on 24 May 2025. Since then, 57 matches have been played, but Xoki has yet to record another official minute for the club.

His only involvement in a matchday squad this season came in early September, when he was an unused substitute in Pirates’ away match against Kruger United. Pirates produced a convincing victory over the league newcomers, but Xoki remained on the bench.

His absence has been linked to injuries suffered in a motor vehicle pile-up involving members of the Pirates squad as they travelled home after a 3-0 win over Chippa United.

Xoki was among those worst affected in the accident and spent several months in hospital under medical supervision. He also required crutches during his recovery.

Having completed the long process of returning to fitness and reaching contention for selection, Xoki’s next objective is to regain playing time.

That opportunity has been difficult to secure because Lebone Seema and Nkosinathi Sibisi have established themselves as Pirates’ first-choice central-defensive pairing. Their performances have been strong enough for both players to earn places in the Bafana Bafana squad.

Sbangani Zulu has also competed for minutes since joining Pirates from Richards Bay. The 23-year-old has played a significant role this season and is already being discussed as a potential senior national team player.

Mpho Chabatsane is another defender seeking more regular opportunities than he has received so far.

For Xoki, the season carries added importance because it is the final one on his current contract at Pirates. In addition to fighting to return to the team, he will also be looking to give the club a reason to extend his stay.
