Orlando Pirates debut ‘didn’t feel real’ for Neo Rapoo

Orlando Pirates defender Neo Rapoo says he was made to feel at home immediately after making his official debut for the Betway Premiership champions, with experienced midfielder Makhehleni Makhaula helping him adapt to life at the club.

The 20-year-old left-back joined Pirates from Siwelele FC during the current transfer window and was also included in the squad for the club’s European pre-season tour. He featured in three of Pirates’ five matches during that trip.

Rapoo’s competitive debut came in Pirates’ 2-0 victory over newly promoted Milford FC at the Orlando Amstel Arena over the weekend. He replaced Deon Hotto in the 75th minute as the defending champions began their season with three points.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Rapoo said the significance of the moment only became clear after he had entered the field.

“Firstly, I didn’t believe it was actually happening,” said Rapoo.

“But once I came on, I just told myself to keep it simple and just enjoy the moment, you know, because I’m privileged to play for this big club and blessed as well.

“It’s been good. I didn’t feel new at all. I felt like I’ve been there before, everyone was friendly you know. Cash [Makhehleni Makhaula] has been agrootmanthat just taught me a lot and made me feel at home.

“Playing with [Oswin] Appollis, Tito [Patrick Maswanganyi], Thalente [Mbatha] and others at SuperSport and coming here with [Bohlale] Ngwato and [Gamphani] Lungu – it just felt good to be there.”

Rapoo has already had the chance to work alongside several established players, both during pre-season and in the opening league fixture. He said that familiarity with some of the squad members, combined with Makhaula’s support, helped ease the transition into a new club.

His move to Pirates follows a period of development with the South African under-20 national team. Rapoo believes his international experience has prepared him for the demands of playing for one of the country’s biggest clubs, where he must manage the expectations that come with performing in front of a large following.

“Yeah, it’s a dream to represent your country, and playing AFCON and the World Cup has taught me a lot about playing at the highest level for my age group,” added Rapoo.

“The pressure that comes with it teaches you to calm your nerves and just be ready for when you have to play in front of a lot of fans, and for Pirates as well.”

Rapoo’s appearance against Milford FC came as Pirates opened their title defence with a clean sheet and a two-goal win. His introduction for Hotto gave him his first competitive minutes for the club after making three appearances on the European pre-season tour.

The South African U20 international will now look to build on that debut as Pirates continue their Betway Premiership campaign.
