Orlando Pirates are not planning to move Abdoulaye Mariko away from the club, despite the midfielder’s limited involvement at the start of the 2026/27 season.

Pirates are understood to believe the 23-year-old can still establish himself in Abdeslam Ouaddou’s plans and are backing him to work towards a more prominent role. Although there has been speculation about a possible departure, including a loan move, that option is not currently being pursued.

Mariko joined the Buccaneers in July last year and is now in his second season with the club. His first campaign brought limited opportunities, and he has yet to become a regular in the Pirates midfield.

However, the Siya crew understands that Ouaddou continues to value the Mali international. The coach reportedly regards Mariko as a hard-working midfielder with an important contribution still to make during the campaign.

Ouaddou is also said to have been impressed by the player’s attitude and work ethic. The expectation within the club is that the manager will turn to Mariko when he believes the timing is right, rather than allowing the midfielder to leave before he has had a further opportunity to prove himself.

The decision comes against the backdrop of strong competition for places in the centre of the Pirates midfield.

Camran Dansin and Thapelo Mokobodi started as the two central midfielders in Sunday’s 3-0 victory over Chippa United and both players produced impressive performances. Ouaddou praised the young pair after the match.

Their opportunity came in part because Thalente Mbatha and Sihle Nduli were unavailable with injuries. Makhehleni Makhaula, meanwhile, is 36 and appears to be being managed carefully.

Those circumstances could open the door for Mariko as the season continues. The Malian has not yet been able to secure a consistent starting position since arriving at Orlando Pirates, but there is no suggestion that the club has lost confidence in him.

Instead, the current expectation is that he will continue to work in training and remain ready for his chance. With a long season still ahead, Mariko may yet force his way into a bigger role under Ouaddou.

For now, Pirates’ position is clear: the midfielder is not being pushed towards an exit, and the club remains prepared to give him time to compete for a place in the team.
