OM midfielder Pape Gueye set for Villarreal reunion with Marcelino

Midfielder Pape Gueye appears poised for a move, with reports linking him to a transfer to Villarreal next season, marking a potential reunion with former OM coach Marcelino.

Gueye’s future at Marseille has been a subject of speculation as his contract nears its conclusion in June.

Despite featuring more frequently in recent matches, the 25-year-old’s departure seems inevitable.

Spanish media outlet AS suggests that Gueye has reached an agreement with Villarreal, paving the way for a new chapter in his career.

According to AS, Gueye is set to sign a four-season contract with an option for an additional year with the Yellow Submarine.

His reunion with Marcelino, who briefly coached OM earlier in the season, is cited as a significant factor in the decision.

Marcelino reportedly identified Gueye as a key target to bolster Villarreal’s midfield for the upcoming campaign.

The prospect of joining Villarreal holds appeal for Gueye, given his prior experience in La Liga.

The Senegalese midfielder spent the latter half of last season on loan at Sevilla FC, where he made 16 appearances in La Liga, showcasing his talent on the Spanish stage.

Gueye’s journey has been marked by twists and turns, including a period of uncertainty at Marseille earlier in the season.

Despite interest from clubs like Cadiz and Sevilla during the winter transfer window, Gueye remained with Marseille and benefited from increased playing time under new manager Jean-Louis Gasset.

Upon his arrival at Marseille, Gasset expressed admiration for Gueye’s abilities, highlighting his desire to utilize the midfielder’s talents effectively within the team.

However, with Gueye now set to embark on a new adventure at Villarreal, his time at Marseille appears to be drawing to a close, with the promise of fresh challenges and opportunities awaiting him in Spain.
