Norway and France are expected to play their crucial World Cup match in Foxborough under improved weather conditions after forecasts indicated the threat of thunderstorms has eased ahead of Friday’s fixture.

The match, scheduled to be played at Gillette Stadium near Boston, is now expected to go ahead without the severe weather concerns that disrupted France’s previous outing earlier in the tournament.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service, showers are forecast earlier in the day, but the conditions are expected to improve before kick-off, reducing the likelihood of thunderstorms during the match.

The updated forecast comes as welcome news for both teams after France’s previous Group-stage match against Iraq in Philadelphia was heavily affected by adverse weather.

Norway and France set for improved playing conditions

The World Cup encounter is due to kick off at 3:00 p.m. local time (7:00 p.m. GMT) at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough.

Thunderstorm threat eases before kick-off

The latest forecast from the U.S. National Weather Service suggests the match should avoid the severe thunderstorms that had initially raised concerns.

Instead, showers are expected mainly during the morning before conditions gradually improve ahead of the afternoon kick-off.

The weather forecast states: “Showers are likely, mostly before 11 a.m. Partly sunny, with a high of around 26°C. Southwest winds 8 to 14 km/h. 60% chance of precipitation. Rainfall totals less than 2.5 mm possible.”

The improved outlook means players and supporters are expected to experience more favourable conditions than those seen earlier in the week.

France hoping to avoid repeat of Philadelphia delay

France experienced significant disruption during their previous World Cup fixture against Iraq on Monday.

Earlier match was suspended for more than two hours

The meeting in Philadelphia, which France won 3-0, was interrupted at half-time because of severe weather conditions.

The delay lasted for more than two hours before play was eventually able to resume.

With Friday’s forecast showing a lower risk of thunderstorms during the scheduled match time, organisers will hope proceedings can continue without a similar interruption.

Rain still possible later in the evening

Although the forecast has improved for the scheduled kick-off, there remains a possibility of unsettled weather later in the day.

Showers could return after the match

The U.S. National Weather Service also notes that weather conditions may change during the evening.

According to the forecast, “a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8 p.m., then a chance of showers between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.”

However, with the match beginning at 3:00 p.m. local time, the latest forecast suggests the fixture is no longer expected to be significantly affected by the thunderstorms that had previously threatened the contest.

The improved weather outlook removes one of the biggest concerns surrounding Friday’s World Cup meeting, allowing attention to focus on the action on the pitch rather than the conditions above it.
