No official offer from Zamalek for Sergio Ramos, despite rumours
Former Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has not received any official offer from Egyptian giants Zamalek, according to recent reports. The 38-year-old, currently a free agent, has been linked to several clubs since his contract with Sevilla expired last summer, but no concrete move has materialized.
Despite widespread speculation that Zamalek were negotiating to bring the veteran Spanish defender to Cairo, sources close to Ramos have denied any formal approach from the Egyptian club.
The reports first surfaced following rumours that Ramos, a four-time UEFA Champions League winner and World Cup champion, was open to the idea of playing in Egypt.
According to Spanish sports outlet AS, Ramos’ representatives confirmed that no offer from Zamalek has been made.
However, they did reveal that the defender had received a substantial offer from Saudi Arabian club Al Orobah.
Additionally, the report mentioned that there has been interest from the MLS side San Diego and Brazilian clubs in recent weeks, as clubs around the world seek to add the vastly experienced defender to their ranks.
Ramos’ illustrious career began at Sevilla before he moved to Real Madrid in 2005, where he spent 16 years and became one of the most decorated players in the club’s history.
During his time at the Bernabeu, he won 22 major trophies, including five La Liga titles, four Champions League crowns, and two Copa del Rey titles.
His leadership and defensive prowess earned him global recognition, and he was instrumental in Spain’s back-to-back European Championship victories in 2008 and 2012, as well as their historic 2010 FIFA World Cup triumph.
After leaving Real Madrid in 2021, Ramos spent two seasons with Paris Saint-Germain, helping the French giants to secure domestic titles.
He returned to his boyhood club Sevilla last season, but his contract was not renewed, leaving him a free agent as of the summer of 2024.
While the rumoured move to Zamalek would have marked a significant moment in Egyptian football, Ramos’ next destination remains unclear.
As he approaches the twilight of his career, he has yet to decide whether to continue playing at a high level in Europe, pursue a more lucrative contract in Saudi Arabia, or take on a new challenge in a growing league such as Major League Soccer.
For now, Zamalek fans will have to wait, as the club has made no official steps towards bringing the legendary defender to the Egyptian Premier League.
Meanwhile, interest from other clubs continues to grow, leaving Ramos with a variety of potential options as he considers the next chapter of his remarkable football journey.
