‘I don’t think people expected us to sign Ivan Toney’ – Chris Wilder on Jordan Ayew

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder says he never expected the club to attract a player of Ivan Toney’s profile when discussing the signing of Ghana captain Jordan Ayew.

Wilder was speaking after Ayew made his Sheffield United debut in Sunday’s 1-0 Championship defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Bramall Lane.

The 35-year-old joined the Blades as a free agent after leaving Leicester City and was introduced in the second half, replacing Ben Brereton Díaz.

Ayew was brought on as Sheffield United searched for a goal in a closely contested encounter and quickly tested the Wolves defence with an effort shortly after his introduction.

Despite the defeat, Wilder was pleased to have added a player with significant experience to his squad as the Blades continue their Championship campaign.

The Sheffield United boss acknowledged that supporters may have expected the club to make a more high-profile signing but stressed that Ayew was the type of experienced player they could realistically secure.

“I don’t know who people think I’m going to sign on the free transfer list. I don’t think they’re going to expect me to go and sign Ivan Toney or somebody like that.”

Wilder believes Ayew can provide valuable experience to the team as Sheffield United look to build momentum during the season.

The Ghanaian brings extensive experience from spells with Marseille, Sochaux, Lorient, Aston Villa, Swansea City, Crystal Palace and Leicester City.
