A final decision on the future of Augustine Eguavoen as head coach of Nigeria’s national football team will be made next week, according to sources within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Sports Commission (NSC).
Eguavoen, who was appointed as interim head coach in September after the NFF failed to secure a permanent manager in time for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, led the Super Eagles to a successful qualification campaign.
However, his position for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers remains uncertain.
An informed source from the NFF told Completesports.com that the NSC is leaning towards retaining Eguavoen in his current role, citing concerns about the practicality of hiring a new coach so close to the World Cup qualifiers.
The limited time a new coach would have before the next game against Rwanda is a factor in their decision-making, the source explained.
While the NFF still considers the possibility of appointing a foreign coach, financial considerations have delayed any concrete steps in that direction.
The NFF is expected to meet with all relevant stakeholders next week to make a final decision on the matter.
